Carlton Haney (1928-2011) was an American music promoter, record producer, and festival organizer who played a significant role in promoting bluegrass music in the 1950s and 1960s. He is best known for organizing some of the earliest bluegrass music festivals, including the first one in 1965, as well as producing and releasing recordings of prominent bluegrass artists such as Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, and Lester Flatt. Haney also helped to establish the bluegrass subgenre called "progressive bluegrass" by promoting artists who experimented with non-traditional instrumentation and arrangements. Additionally, he played a key role in introducing bluegrass music to audiences in Europe by organizing tours and promoting concerts in the UK and other countries. Despite his early contributions to the genre, Haney's reputation has been somewhat tarnished by allegations of unethical business practices, including the unauthorized use of recordings and failure to pay royalties to artists.
